Will social utility tools like facebook and hi5 make email like hotmail yahoo etc. redundant?

http://www.facebook.com seeems like a good way to keep in contact with friends and family, not sure when it started but many of friends past and present seem to be getting into it.

Hotmail and Yahoo have much better mail applications than facebook and hi5. I wouldnt use facebook messaging exclusively unless it had all the features my yahoo account does.
Reply:i doubt it - not unless they do some serious marketing.

I am a member of hi5 - but have hardly used it since i joined as the only person i knew on there was my ex-husbands neice, and i hadn't even heard of facebook until reading the questions about it on yahoo answers!
Reply:yeah i use facebook instead of email now if i want to contact a friend or family member...it's quicker and easier. email is still used for other stuff though..and some people i know still don't have facebook or don't want it so i have to email them.

=)
Reply:yeah, facebook is my main source of contact for my friends that I dont get to see a lot.

I use use email to write to my parents though, since they do not have a facebook.
